Description

Eşrefoğlu Mosque was built between 1296-1299 by Eşrefoğlu Bey, Süleyman Bey. It is the largest and original of the wooden pillared mosques in Anatolia. Located in Konya’s Beyşehir District, the mosque rises on 46 wooden columns. The pillars are cedar wood and were soaked in water for 6 months before being built. For centuries, the snow on the roof of the mosque during the winter months was thrown into the pool in the middle from the gap in the middle of the roof and prevented the wooden columns from cracking and drying out due to the stoves that were burned by moisturizing the environment.

It has a magnificent altar, 6 meters high, covered with tile mosaic, and a carved, roofed, glueless pulpit entirely made of walnut wood. In this magnificent wooden structure, metal connections such as nails and screws were not needed, and the technique of insertion-inlay was used. The most important feature that makes the mosque valuable is its mostly original wooden parts and the most successful and ostentatious hand-drawn works on these surfaces.

Colored pencil works and root-painted motifs draw attention on the ceiling of the mosque. The tile mosaic mihrab and the minbar made in the kündekari technique are important decoration elements of the mosque. It is the only example that contains all the features used in the Seljuk Ulu Mosques.
