Description

Calligraphy was one of the most valuable professions in the Ottoman Empire, when literacy and calligraphy were important, when times changed and lives were shaped. Inkwells, which were important and sacred to the calligrapher, were made of woods such as walnut, ebony, olive and kuka, and metals such as earth, glass, brass, silver and gold. So that they would not leak ink or rust, wax or rosin was melted and a paste was applied to them. Inkwells used with a brush, dipstick or feather are designed not to spill ink when knocked down.
