Description
Before the invention of firearms, the shield is a hand-held defensive weapon made of leather, metal, in angular or round form, to protect the body against striking, piercing and cutting weapons. They were left-handed, made in rectangular, round or raised forms. Shields are named according to the material from which they are made. The iron ones were called “hacefe”, and the round one of the steel shields was called “yaleb”. Another variety was called “funny”. The manufacture of the shield and the ornamentation on it had a great importance in Turkish handicrafts.
The Enameled Shield Vase is adapted from the ornamental patterns on the 16th-century Ottoman period shield in the Topkapı Palace Museum, and the pattern on the middle belly is inspired by the tiled plate found in the 16thcentury Kütahya Museum.
