Galata Tower was built by the Genoese in 1384 as the main tower of the Galata walls. The tower is 61 meters above the ground. It was used as a dungeon in the 16th century and as a fire watchtower in the 18th century.
It was completely burned in the fire in 1794, in 1832 II. It was rebuilt by Mahmut. The tower, which was used as a fire control station until 1964, was restored and opened to visitors in 1967.
